About Andy

Andy Allen was born in Rhuddlan, North Wales and now lives and works in Nottingham. He earned a BA in Fine Art from the Loughborough University School of Art and Design.

Andy describes the work by saying, “Inviting the viewer into a less familiar environment, the simple compositions allow the paint to speak. The work explores a diverse approach to oil painting: borrowing traditions and exploring processes in order to investigate different ways of controlling and engaging with the viewer. The tension between the silent, geometric structures and the rhythm of nature create a disquieting unease that can allude to the Uncanny. This body of work is a direct development from the Borderline Project, exploring the relationships between architecture, design and the tradition of oil painting. Becoming more self aware of the way in which I work, and the implications of this, enabled me to take the work back to basics, and begin to develop on, and experiment with, elements of my painting process. This approach lead to a body of large scale oil paintings which were finalized and designed for the graduate show, whilst maintaining a level of invention. This ultimately consolidated my painting process.”

"Great work! I love the color blocking and brushwork. I really love the piece I saw on your website from a couple years ago. I think it was called pinewood- a modern interior studio, also one of three blue panels on a rooftop was great. Fantastic compositions!"

"I love the monochromatic color of the trees and the reflections in the windows."
