About Alexandre:

Portuguese-born Alexandre Farto’s range spans from collage to portraiture. Of late he’s taken to creating works purely from in situ materials, taking Vandalism as art to its logico ad absurdum conclusion. Advertising hoardings are torn to make fresh images, and plaster drilled away at until the remaining relief forms the work. He is, at the time of writing, experimenting with a cocktail of Quink ink and household bleach. But this is a long way from brutalism. Vhils art is poetic, complex, and ambitious, often focusing on the needs we have abandoned in favour of our wants, and the realisation that trading pleasure back in for happiness will be a less than straightforward exchange.

Tears of joy flowing from my eyes in recognition of art at its best. Thank you for this daily feature.

I ride my horse, turn to the camera, and shed a single tear for the pollution plaguing this once pristine land….

Hacia tiempo que una obra no me conmovia como esta. Flores en el asfalto, la fragilidad de la belleza en medio de la ciudad mas despiadada. Bello en verdad

For sure Sarah, I was thinking the same thing!!! However I believe this artist has gone a step further. He truly makes the beautifully tragic come to life, instead of copying the Great Master’s or others’ well known photography. I know Muniz did some of his own photography, but he borrowed ALOT! At first glance and before reading about the artist, I really thought this art was about being more in touch with our material environment than each other. Do we only pay attention to each other when things are on the brink of tragedy/the tragic? I am truly moved. I love it!
