Caroline Hwang is a Brooklyn-based artist who paints and sews collages, creating images that express human emotion, self-reflection, and the strength and difficulty of relationships.
Hwang’s method reads like one that would yield abstract or messy results: painted fabric, covered in embroidery, drawing and yet more painting. The results, however, seem very deliberate, recalling the comic book art that has been one of her main influences. Her work often portrays colorful domestic scenes, with human figures as well as symbolic elements, and touches of melancholy and whimsy.
