Shawn Smith was born in 1972 in Dallas. He received a BFA in printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis and, in 1995 and an MFA in sculpture from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2005.
His work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States including Austin Museum of Art, Galveston Art Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Southern Exposure. In 2006 he was commissioned to create a monumental public sculpture in San Francisco.
Smith has undertaken residencies at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley and Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 1996, he received a Clare Hart DeGolyer grant from the Dallas Museum of Art, and next year his work will be included in 40 Under 40: Craft Futures at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery.
