About Shawn


Shawn Smith was born in 1972 in Dallas. He received a BFA in printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis and, in 1995 and an MFA in sculpture from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2005.

His work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States including Austin Museum of Art, Galveston Art Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Southern Exposure. In 2006 he was commissioned to create a monumental public sculpture in San Francisco.

Smith has undertaken residencies at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley and Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 1996, he received a Clare Hart DeGolyer grant from the Dallas Museum of Art, and next year his work will be included in 40 Under 40: Craft Futures at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery.

very beautiful! i love the idea of turning an electronic idea such a pixel into a dot of...wood...marvellous!at the same time, you've kept the idea of miniaturisation ...and what an outcome!sculptures with every bit of them accounted for and for all to see!again, fantastic!creative and original...the wooden red fox is to my liking!

My Mother was a good mosaic setter, and while these art works are similar to them, I see a wonder depth to them. Actually they are really beautiful! Thank you!
