About Kwon Kyung

Kwon Kyung Yup, a graduate of Sejong University in Korea, begins her process by taking photographs first; this captures all the details and expressions. She then makes a draft of the photo and paints in on canvas with oil. Although it seems unorthodox, this technique was employed in the beginning stages of photography. Before photography was possible to print, they were used as a research tool in developing wood engraved illustrations. During the 1860s and 1870s, wood engravings were drawn from photographs and they became prevalent in mass communication. Kwon is ideally using photography in the same light but transferring onto canvas. Although printing photography is simple today, Kwon paints to layer what photography cannot, her arduous strokes, layers of meaning and passion with her hands.

"Good attention to details, soft color for light and shadow and bold lines to add emphasis to focal points from what I see in this image, even the bold lines are delicate. Lovely work."

"Personally speaking, the whole point of painting/drawing something is to accomplish what photography cannot, that is to add a twist to reality. If everything were to be the same as a photo, is there a deeper motivation? Or is it just the satisfaction gained from being able to replicate reality and demonstrate some good painting techniques?"

"so soft"

"it looks sad, but very pretty, i like the detail with the eye and with the hand it kinda looks like she is trying to hide her tears/ wipe them awy"

"the eye really got to me i just love eyes they are so round and perfect"

"This artwork is about a little baby"

"Why not just use photography? Conceptually it seems unnecessary to paint over the photos..."
