Suyeon Na is a Korean-born artist based in New York. She has worked in various genres according to each series’ theme, ranging from drawing to photography. Though her projects display a broad range of styles and images, their common theme lies in representing the mental states caused by relocation and creating psychological narratives of an alien living in a new country.
In her most recent project, Suyeon transforms daily scenes and locales in America by combining them with traditional materials and visual elements in East Asian art. Language barriers and cultural differences evoked her imagination and motivation to understand the new environment, and inspired her to reconstruct situations and places from her perspective. Also, her installations focus on subverting and transforming domestic spaces that most Americans accept as part of daily life. Suyeon Na’s delicate drawings and evocative installations show a fantastical melding of personal narrative, myth, and architecture.
