About Leah

Personal photographs taken with a 35mm camera inspire the imagery in each piece. The photographs that interest me most are the ones that someone else would rip up or erase from their digital camera shortly after they are taken. Not knowing what to expect from the film is exciting to me and many times leads to happy accidents like corrupt composition, disheveled hair, flushed cheeks and red eye. I am also intrigued with the space in a photograph. I often eliminate objects and elements to create location-less expanses, allowing the figures to exist in voids and allow for multiple narratives.

The content and formal elements in my paintings combine to offer an always personal, occasionally caricature-like narrative, addressing and encompassing both the awkwardness and the complexity of the human condition. Although the work is a documentation of my personal experiences, I hope that the images will evoke familiar feelings or create a sense of voyeurism – as if the viewer is peeking into a still from someone else’s life that is utterly foreign to them. My paintings are snippets of time that capture moments and function as a visual diary to create my social realism, a documentation of 30-something contemporary lifestyle and behavior.

My work is a celebration of life. I strive to make paintings of my life, the people and the world around me. I want to create a wonderful and vital dialog between people and art, and between art and life.

The artist seems to be at a lost as to what she really wants to do with the work, so she just has their tongues out.

Wonderfully talented artist! While her material is surprisingly shallow, she relates it well.

I like it. And I think the work has meaning. Toulouse-Lautrec would be proud.

i like that picture its style i wish i had a canvis painting of it

Good technique, but the subject matter turns me off. Sorry, but sexy drunks simply don't appeal to me. I would like to see her love for lightheartedness used in more compelling scenes and with more variety. If she expanded her subject matter a wider and more diverse audience could relate to her work.

But...good technique as I said. She obviously has a lot of talent.

Well done,I love the pink shades used along with the splashes of white.

I love the color and the technique, but the bottom one goes from cool to a little too raunchy for my taste.

Nice work for advertising on cheap magz and that's all. It looks graffitish

These examples don't do anything for me. They seem too sophomoric and trivial in subject matter and approach. I feel like I've seen this many times before. Painting drunk friends is, as dmgo put it, tiresome. I went to the artist's website to see if there was anything more to her work. Same exact painting over and over. I read her artist's statement and am curious why it opens with a full paragraph on photography. Would love to see an expansion of subject matter and medium. These just seem too goofy.

Her figures are more personal then universal which really draws me away from her paintings. I feel no emotional attachment to the story (if there is any) that she is trying to tell.

That being said, her mark making technique does bring her some credit with the complexity of textures she has in her paintings. Change the subject matter and depart from the photograph. Show me what I don't see everyday on social networking sites when someone has a party. Move the flash or light source at different angles so everything doesn't look so centered.
