About Amy

I am interested in the idea of artist as mad scientist. My drawings offer visual hypotheses to the question: what would happen if the DNA sequence of a plant or mushroom were spliced with that of an animal” Using graphite, watercolor, and walnut ink on paper as well as directly on gallery walls in site-specific installations, I portray animals morphed with branches, mushrooms, berries, and blossoms, thus forming implausible hybrid creatures. These images subvert the traditional genre of botanical illustration by approaching the close study of the natural world through the lens of genetic engineering and mutation gone awry.

I enjoyed looking at your work, Amy. I agree that the white background makes the subject stand out. The reminded me of drawings that botanists/zoologists etc. would draw - which makes the subject more plausible.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING ABOUT THE BADGERS! :)

It's like one of those books where the pages are cut in two and you can turn either the top or bottom or top page and create fantastical things.

I am also an artist and know everyone interprets tings differently, usually the exact opposite of what you are actually thinking(even if you don't care what they think). However, I believe that it is the lack of background in the thing paintings that makes them "pop" the most. By putting such a detailed item in the middle of all that white space you essentially eliminate the poss of getting lost in the habitat; and I was finding myself zoned in on the subject going "WHAT IS THAT?". I love anything fantasy and you pull it off remarkably! I wish I had a print of these! Keep up the good work!

Mushrooms and snakes? The badgers are missing! :)

Now I don't claim to be any great artist and I know that you did a great job but if you could give the background something more it would be absolutely amazing!

I think this is good work. It is a different way of thinking about art, what couldn't happen in the real world, you can put into art! Great new idea.

that snake 'shroom thing is horrible, gives me the creeps.

Hm.. It's like the Temptation. This toadstool..

Cool to see you on here Amy, I was here a few months ago, great site. Your new work is very cool.
