Joe Helms was born in Prince George County, Maryland and he graduated from Maryland Institute College Of Art in 1990 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Painting.
For over 20 years Joe was a freelance mural artist, commissioned by museums, hospitals, restaurants and various commercial developers and designers. Joe produced a myriad of murals and custom canvas pieces that are showcased across the United States. At the same time Joe continued to produce and exhibit his personal fine art paintings.
Joe explains his work by saying, “I would define my style as modern classical. I’m interested in life’s little dramas. Using allegory and symbolism there evolves a suspension of disbelief. Drawing the viewer in and along a storyline. I’m interested in tapping into the collective unconscious so each individual viewer forms their own personal narrative from the piece. I strive for a contrast between a calm and uneasy with a pensive quality, the instance before the event.”
