A native of Japan, Chie Yoshii came to the United States in 1996 to attend Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. She began her career as a visual effects artist in Los Angeles, but eventually shifted her focus to painting, her primary passion. She has studied drawing and painting at schools including Art Center College of Design and Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. She studied intensively with mentor Adrian Gottlieb from 2002 to 2008.
Chie describes her work by saying, “I am inspired by the analogy between mythological tales and the human psychology. In my paintings, layers of allegorical images create syncretic, dreamlike worlds. A profusion of symbols forces the representational images to be abstract as a whole, allowing the viewers to create their own personal interpretations.”
