Jamie Vasta is an American visual artist who was born in 1980, earned a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston / Tufts University and a MFA from California College of the Arts, San Francisco.
Vasta, remained a Bay Area resident and has been using glitter as a medium for 10 years now. her works grapple with complex, serious and even morbid subject matter. Her earlier work highlighted young women stalking butchering men who had intruded on their wooded lair.
“I believe in unabashed beauty. With glitter and glue I create ecstatic landscapes- moments of serene sunset beauty or the fury of storm. I am interested in the sublime- beauty and terror experienced inseparably, like melodrama. I want my paintings to do what stained glass does. Glitter can evoke cheap illusion or a painless perfect world. Or it can shimmer into an image that transcends its cheapness, and play at being gold and diamonds, crushed lapis, oilslicks or beetle shells. My paintings simultaneously deflect and seduce the viewer’s gaze, shifting in and out of reach” says Vasta.
