Erin Murray received a BFA Summa Cum Laude from Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, in 2001.
The subjects of her work are buildings, but Murray borrows techniques typical of portraiture to give them a human quality. By being depicted front on or at a three-quarter view, the buildings seem to gaze at the viewer.
It’s important to Murray that the buildings wear their personal history on their facades, in the way that humans wear scars or clothing. Each painting is meant to feature just one building, so she is also careful to keep backgrounds minimal.
Her work has been extensively exhibited in Pennsylvania and across the East Coast.
