About Steven:

Steven Spencer’s dark and moody cityscapes have a feel of Gotham City about them.

Shot in various urban locations around Europe, the photographs in his European Views series are created by merging different elements from a particular area together to build up images that represent not only the look, but the feel of a place or space.

By photographing the more detailed aspects of a landscape such as surface marks on a wall or street, cloud formations in the sky and traces of light caused by movement, and then placing the images over one another and then over the original shot of the landscape, Spencer creates a layering system that gives a unique depth to his work, both visually and conceptually.

The result is an encapsulating collection of atmospheric portraits of the urban landscape that seem to project the viewer into an other-worldly dimension.

About “Flags”:

Spencer’s unique and stunning works on canvas represent a departure from his photographic work. These bold and graphic statements explore themes of national identity, military power and the social issues of our modern times and are produced using stencils, spray paint and hand finished brushwork.

Nationality defined, simplicity, juxtaposition, rock & roll, pop, dystopia, and environmental degradation!?

I love how people get so defensive when they think their values are being threatened. If you would look at his site you would see that he has a small series of guns with the flags of different nations overlayed. It’s not an attack on America “Ess”, it’s just a concept. I think that it’s an interesting generalization to associate a flag that symbolizes a nation as a whole and juxtapose that with ANY other object, whether it’s appropriate or not. It’s a dialogue and it doesn’t always have to be profound and it doesn’t have to be an accurate portrayal of our vast and diverse nation.

I love these. The first one expresses so much with using so little. It makes a statement that all should see and listen to.
The second one is a beautifully morbid reality of our world today.
Both of these are truths. Blunt and true.

Wow. A gun. An American Flag. Lets just bash our great country some more. I don’t like it.

The flag images are trite and unoriginal. Pieces of that ilk are amateurish at best. Even a great artist can make a mistake. While I won’t comment on whether or not I think Spencer is great, I will say that the flags are a mistake. He should further explore the cityscapes and photography that he is decidedly better at.

Both works of art are saying sooooo much about present day and people need to be aware even though they do not want to be. I love it definitely original.
