About Carlos:
Carlos No started out his work in the field of painting but, in recent years, has paid special attention to sculpture, proceeding in this transition with the same deontological principles that have always guided his way. Sculpture, nevertheless, allows him to develop formal particularities that contribute towards the endless pursuit of a connection with the enveloping space. This direction, not only widens the sculptural limits regarding the field of installation, but also enables the spectator to relate to the piece in the exhibitive space, by way of an intimate, introspective and personal experience.
About “Solarium” (left):
“Solarium” circumscribes in an exemplary way what was referred to above. The artist split a piece of a log of wood in two parts, recreating two worlds with different environments: one nocturnal; the other diurnal. Each one of these environments is inhabited by different lifestyles. In the diurnal, solar environment, small figures represent a couple lounging on two deckchairs placed on a lawn, enjoying the sun in a relaxed, laid-back way. In the nocturnal environment, another couple (presumably farmers) toils the soil after dusk. The first world lives in leisure; populated by light and happiness. The second world lives in a sombre silence, off matter and labour; off a contained suffering which seeks in the horizon the hope that seems to have been extinguished.

Carlos No is one of those (rare) artist where ego and pretentiousness never stands before is work – honest, deep in reality and smart work, I am sure will be in the best museums and galeries all over the world pretty soon!

Interesting piece. It’s not nearly as pretentious as much of the art I’ve seen on here lately. There seems to be some honesty in its creation.
