Jane Smaldone was born in New York City. She received a BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art in 1976.
Previous series have included landscapes and still lives painting, but her current focus is painting portraits of her twelve-year-old daughter, Isabel. Her stylistic influences include Chinese landscape painting, Surrealism and North American folk art.
Smaldone views her creative practice as an act not of representation but transformation, encompassing the past, the perceived present and the imagined future.
Her work has been exhibited locally and several times in Canada.
